More help for small business

CSUMB's SBDC hosts workshop on access to capital

For small businesses, access to capital is access to opportunity. According to a July survey by the Federal Reserve, 35 percent of banks have tightened small business lending since the recession began.

capital access SBDCOn Nov. 20, California State University, Monterey Bay's new Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer a seminar aimed at helping small businesses access capital. The event will be held at the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Kay Mardon, lender relations specialist with the U.S. Small Business Administration, will present a workshop on SBA loan programs; Mary Claypool of the Monterey County Business Council will talk about the resources available to help businesses avoid layoffs; and Andrea Zeller-Nield, associate director of the Small Business Development Center, will give a presentation on what the center can offer small businesses.

Dr. Marylou Shockley, chair of CSUMB's School of Business, will present opening and closing remarks.

Participants are invited to bring business cards for use during a mid-afternoon networking break.

small businessBusiness counselors from the SBDC will be available to meet owners and to set follow-up appointments to help with plans to access capital.

The counselors are experienced with lenders and can conduct an in-depth analysis of a business's financial situation. Counselors are available as exclusive advisers to a business and can make practical suggestions to help owners get the capital they need.
